Workshop Biological Materials Science at TUMCS
On June 6 and 7, a workshop on “Biological Materials Science” took place at the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS). The international workshop with exclusively invited, top-class speakers with a focus on biogenic, bioinspired, biomimetic and biohybrid materials for innovative optical, photonics and optoelectronics applications was organized by Prof. Cordt Zollfrank (Chair of Biogenic Polymers) and Prof. Rubén D. Costa (Chair of Biogenic Functional Materials).
Delegates of Cornell University visit TUMCS
Last Thursday, a delegation from Cornell University and SUNY College visited the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS). Prof. Dominik Grimm and Prof. Volker Sieber welcomed Dr. Jillian Goldfarb (Cornell University) and Dr. Tristan Brown (SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry) to the Campus for Biotechnology and Sustainability and explained TUMCS’ unique focus on the bioeconomy.

At the second Career Day at the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS) on Tuesday, international corporations and regional companies presented their sustainable careers and provided answers to the most pressing questions students have about their professional future.
Around 160 new Master’s students in Straubing
The Straubing Campus for Biotechnology and Sustainability of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is becoming increasingly popular: around 160 new Master’s students will start their studies at the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS) at the start of lectures on Monday.
A week in the spirit of the bioeconomy
The Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) was one of four regions in Germany to successfully apply to take part in the Bioeconomy Changemakers Festival. With several events organized in Straubing, the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS) took part in this bioeconomy festival week together with other partners. The aim of the festival week was primarily to attract young people as drivers of the sustainable transformation. In total, more than 200 interested people attended the events.
A pioneer of industrial design visits Straubing
Prof Brook Kennedy, an internationally renowned designer, recently visited the TUM Campus Straubing (TUMCS) for Biotechnology and Sustainability. The award-winning pioneer of industrial design spent three weeks as a guest at Prof Cordt Zollfrank’s Chair of Biogenic Polymers and explored possible collaborations with the researchers in Straubing.
Prof. Goerg receives Teaching Excellence Award 2023
On Monday, 29 January, the student council presented the Teaching Excellence Award 2023. This student prize is awarded annually for the best teaching and recognises effort, hard work and outstanding teaching. “But it’s also a way to thank our professors for everything and their exceptional work,” says the student council.
The somewhat different lecture
As part of the seminar “Circular Economy and Sustainability Management in the Global South”, ten TUMCS students, accompanied by Prof. Dr. Magnus Fröhling and Vanessa Heinrich, traveled to the Ghanaian capital Accra. For years, e-waste from all over the world – including Germany – has accumulated in West Africa, mostly imported illegally into the region and processed and recycled locally under precarious and dangerous conditions.

The prize is awarded to students, doctoral candidates or scientists working at the Competence Center for Renewable Resources and have drawn attention to themselves through special achievements or initiatives, also in support of outstanding dissertations, master’s or diploma theses.
Hands-on expertise for the bioeconomy
Michael Zavrel has worked on the development of industrial bioprocesses that turn waste into high-quality products. Now the Professor of Bioprocess Engineering is passing on his knowledge from industry in the lab and the lecture hall at the TUM Campus Straubing.
